
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18 1999) is an American actress and a singer. Her career spans more than 40 years. London was a torch performer known for her soft, pleasant singing voice and languid contralto she recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955-1969. Her performance of "Cry Me a River" the track she released on her debut album, was admitted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for 1974 for her performance in Emergency! as Nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began acting as an actress as she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 , with roles in films. They included roles as the female lead in many westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958), and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). The singer signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This was the beginning of her professional music career. In 1969 she released her final studio album. But she was prominent in the emergency series as Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) She starred with her husband Bobby Troup. The show was created by her former husband Jack Webb.
